It’s best
...for the environment
Protecting the environment as the primary means of safeguarding human health is one of the cornerstones of our company policy, which has led us over the years to base our activities on respect for the environment and the careful management of its resources.
Photovoltaic System
In 2023, the installation of our new photovoltaic system was completed, covering over 4,400 square metres. The system comprises 2,278 photovoltaic modules and 8 inverters, capable of capturing the sun’s energy and converting it into electricity. The panels cover the entire factory and warehouse, spanning a total area of 4,400 square metres, making this one of the largest systems in Calabria installed on the roofs of high-energy-consumption industrial buildings.
The transition from energy production using fossil-fuel-fired thermoelectric power stations to a renewable energy source will enable a reduction in CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere of as much as 481,635 kg per year. There will also be lower emissions of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter – harmful substances that cause pollution, the greenhouse effect and climate change. This marks a further step along the path towards sustainability that the company has been pursuing for some time.
Water Treatment
Wastewater from the manufacturing process is treated in the company’s treatment plant before being discharged into the environment. This treatment ensures that the water meets the standards set out in current regulations for discharge into surface waters in sensitive areas.
The treatment plant is a biological system, meaning it uses activated sludge to break down the organic substances present in the process water.
The treatment process involves the following steps:
- Screening to remove coarse solid materials;
- Equalisation, i.e. the accumulation and mixing of effluents to achieve the most homogeneous wastewater possible;
- Removal of fats in a flotation tank via a physico-chemical process;
- Denitrification in an anoxic environment, during which bacteria reduce nitrates to nitrogen;
- Oxidation in an aerated environment, during which bacteria break down organic substances through oxidative processes;
- Sedimentation, during which the water is clarified and the bacteria are separated;
- Disinfection of the water by chlorination prior to final discharge.
Our Commitment to Tackling Food Waste
Among the causes close to our hearts and in which we are actively involved is the fight against food waste. Tuna, in fact, is the ultimate solution to food waste:
- All waste from tuna processing is regularly sent to companies that process it further, and is therefore reused;
- The packaging is hermetically sealed and sterilised, without the addition of preservatives;
- The packaging is fully recyclable;
- The oil from the tin can be consumed or reused in cooking.
Fishing Methods
Our commitment to a high-quality product begins with respect for the sea and its ecosystem right from the fishing stage.
This is why we carefully select our raw material suppliers, choosing only those who meet our quality standards and hold the relevant safety and quality certifications.
Fishing Areas
We diversify our fishing areas to respect the species’ reproduction and recovery cycles. The tuna we use is caught in the Atlantic Ocean (FAO zones 34, 41, 47 and 27), the Indian Ocean (FAO zones 51 and 57), the Pacific Ocean (FAO zones 71, 77, 81 and 87) and the Mediterranean Sea (FAO zone 37). The FAO zone of origin of the fish is indicated on the packaging, ensuring complete transparency for our consumers.
A Certified Commitment
Safeguarding the environment as the foremost form of protection for human health, especially in a region where tourism represents a vital resource, is one of the cornerstones of our corporate policy. This is why, over the years, even amidst certain challenges, we have endeavoured to conduct our activities with respect for the local territory and careful management of its resources.
The measures we carefully implement to protect the environment can be summarised as follows:
- We source raw materials (tuna and loins) that carry the ‘dolphin-safe’ certificate (caught in conditions that safeguard dolphins);
- We purchase raw materials certified by FOS (Friends of the Sea) or MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), meaning they are guaranteed to come from eco-sustainable fisheries; these must originate from stocks/populations that are not overfished (according to assessments by the FAO and relevant bodies) and be caught using selective methods (low levels of by-catch and discards) with no impact on the seabed; traceability must be guaranteed at every stage of the supply chain, and only adult fish that have already reached sexual maturity may be caughtmsc;
- We give preference to suppliers who can demonstrate a commitment to environmental protection;
- We use recyclable materials wherever possible;
- We have equipped our factory with an efficient wastewater treatment plant, which is regularly monitored by both our in-house laboratory and external laboratories
- We have implemented a careful waste management system, introducing separate waste collection and entering into contracts with specialist companies for disposal or treatment for recycling purposes;
- We carefully manage waste from tuna processing, which is regularly sent to companies that process it, particularly for the production of pet food: indeed, our customers include prestigious brands specialising in the production of dog and cat food;
- We use detergents and sanitising products in a controlled manner and train our staff on their correct use;
- We monitor the quantities of water used during processing, with the aim of optimising consumption;
- We pay close attention to the maintenance and monitoring of energy-generating systems (steam boilers) and refrigeration systems, with a view to optimising consumption
